A basket for a box!

Last night while the rest of my family went to watch the high school basketball team, I stayed home to catch up on orders. I also made one new basket for my etsy site...

The basket fits perfectly in this box that my husband brought home from work. I've got him trained! He saw this box sitting in the factory, waiting to be broken down and recycled. Knowing that I need lots of boxes and sometimes oddly shaped boxes, he rescued this box and brought it home. What could I do, but weave a basket to fit in the box!

I will not be listing any additional baskets on my etsy site until after 1/1/2012. I will let you all know when there are new ones!

Another Berry Basket

Almost immediately after I listed my last berry basket, it sold - Thank you Teresa! I just finished another one, using a slightly different color - this one is called "Thatched Roof". Love that name. Wouldn't that be a great job to name paint colors? We are testing out 2 different grays to paint our house, one is Stealth Jet and the other Dark Cavern. Do you major in adjectives to get a job like that? Sorry, back to the baskets...... Small Shaker Berry Basket

My New Favorite Basket

I know, I always say this whenever I make a new basket, but this is my now favorite!

I made a square market basket, stained it and then wrapped the handle with black rug hooking wool. I whip stitched the wool around the handle so it's tight and won't slide.

Earlier this month, I decided to open an Etsy shop with my baskets. You can find me HERE on Etsy.

In celebration of this new outlet, I've decided to have a giveaway for all of my current followers/customers.

The measurements on this basket are: 8 1/2" long, 6 1/2" wide and 4 1/4" to top of rim. The height of the handle is 9" and the handle swings back and forth, although it remains in whatever position you leave it in.

I've lined the basket with a torn piece of homespun. There are narrow maroon lines running both horizontally and vertically through the piece. This material is easily removed for washing.

Don't I always say "I Love how this basket turned out?" I do! The colors blend so well together - the aged label along with the painted & stained basket is perfect.

Star Wrapped Basket

I created this small-medium basket yesterday. I was inspired by the pottery stars that I purchased from http://indiantrailpottery.blogspot.com/. I found the maroon twill tape in a prim shop this summer knowing that it would be perfect in a basket.

The basket features a solid wood bottom (round) and side handles. Approximate measurements are: 10 5/8" to top of handles, 9 1/4" to top of rim. Top diameter is 8 1/2" and bottom diameter is 5". The sides flare out gradually.

Stained in my own boiled black walnut dye.

Divided Magazine Basket

This is a great basket for magazines or newspapers, but could also be used as a project basket for knitting or rug hooking.

The basket is constructed on a wooden base/handle combination that bears the entire weight of the contents. Makes it perfect for keeping all your favorite prim magazines in!

The cross-stitch detail is made up of two different materials: the horizontal strip is 1" wide maple that is laid over the vertical spokes and the stitching that holds it in place is narrow hamburg cane that has been dyed a deep maroon. A fun technique that adds a different design element to this basket.

Approximate measurements are: height to rim of basket - 10", height to top of handle 13", length is 15" and width is 12"

Ewe 'n Me Tote

This little tote basket would be perfect for small knitting projects, needle punch projects or even your lunch!

After lashing the rim into place with reed, I over-lashed with a black homespun. I LOVE how it turned out.

The five rows of color at the bottom and top are black. The basket features a closed bottom(no holes) and a push in handle. The sheep accent is a painted wooden item that I found at a basket shop - too cute!

Measurements are approximately: 12" to top of handle, 8" to top of rim, 7" wide and 9" long. The entire basket is stained with my boiled black walnut stain.

Carry All Market Basket

This One of A Kind Basket is my new favorite! Of course - they are all my favorites at one time or another! After finishing the basket, I made a liner from Thimbleberries material that wraps down the side about 2 inches. The liner is held in place with a drawstring made from the same material. The material is black with small brown stars in the background and mustard colored stars in the foreground.

I then attached the rusty wire garland to the front that is highlighted by 5 stars - the largest one in the middle, the other 4 are all the same smaller size. The basket is approximately 8 inches wide, 13 inches long and 7 inches high. The height to the handle is 12 inches. ~~Price for this is $55.00 which includes continental US shipping~~. Another one of my smaller comb baskets - this one I stained with a watered down black and it almost looks to be a slate blue. The year 1803 is hand stitched on Irish Linen and the entire piece is stitched to the front of the basket. $23.00 plus $7.00 shipping in the continental US.

Custom Orders

I do make custom baskets! A fellow blogger emailed me ordering a basket she'd seen on an earlier post. I mentioned to her that I can and am happy to change colors is she wanted different colors in the basket.

She requested a red stripe/star combination. Thought I'd share the finished basket with you. This is a basket that has a hole in the bottom, it's used to store plastic shopping bags. You simply pull one out the bottom when you need a bag. The handle on the back hangs on a nail or peg. $28.00 plus $7.00 shipping

Shaker Gathering Basket

A wonderful round basket with a twined bottom. The basket measures 4 1/2" to the top of the weaving with a total height of approximately 9" to the top of the handle.

The diameter of the basket is 9 1/2".

The handle is a neat "dip" style handle.

The finish on this one is a stain with an overdye of my own boiled black walnut dye. Total including shipping (Continental US) is $35.00, Paypal or Money Order. ~SOLD~

Miniature Egg Basket

This mini egg basket is petite - not quite 4 1/2" tall and almost 5" wide at the widest part. I used an antique embroidery hoop for the handle and rim. It is one of the really old ones that doesn't have a tightening mechanism on it. The wood in these hoops has developed a wonderful patina over the years.

The basket itself is woven with 3mm flat oval reed. (3mm is close to 1/8" wide) There are 6 spokes per side plus the one above the rim for added decoration. I stained this with boiled black walnut hull dye. This would be a perfect little basket on a smaller shelf. $45.00 which includes shipping to continental US.

Shaker Cat Head Baskets

Large and Medium sized Shaker Cat Head Baskets

Large Cat Head - approximately 12 1/2" tall (including handle), basket height just under 7" tall. Diameter is approximately 10 1/2" wide. Stained with my boiled black walnut stain. The handle is hand carved and feels wonderful in the hand. $40.00 which includes shipping to US addresses. ~SOLD~

The photo below is so you can see why this is a called a "Cat Head" basket. The Shaker people made these baskets over a mold to assure consistency in size and shape. I do not use a mold, but form the ears by manipulating the reeds to the shape I want. Can you see the cats' ears and chubby little face in this photo?

Prim Market Baskets

Simplify Market Basket

has a black rim with black seagrass insert and black lasing. I stitched the word Simplify on osnaburg with dark brown embroidery floss, aged it and attached to a black/tan print fabric. A rusty star is attached to the top edge of the osnaburg. The basket is over-stained with my boiled walnut stain, walnuts gathered here in NW Ohio. The basket has a filled bottom - no open holes for knitting needles to fall through. Approximate measurements - 13"long, 8" wide, basket i s 7" tall, and with the handle it is 12" tall.

Blessings Market Basket

Blessings Market Basket is identical to the Simplify Market Basket above with the exception that it doesn't have a rusty star attached to it. The rim is black and the entire basket is over-stained with my boiled black walnut stain. Approximate measurements are the same as Simplify Basket.

Wall Basket

This little wall basket is stained black, roughed up with sand paper and stained with my boiled black walnut stain. I stitched a label for the front that says "1803" and attached it to the center front of the basket. The first picture below is with the flash off And this photo is with the flash on, so that you can see the label better.

Measurements are: 8 3/8" long, 8 5/8" tall to the tip of the hanger and the pouch is approximately 4" high and 4 1/2" deep. Sorry, tallow berries not included.
Price for this wall basket is $23.00 plus shipping - I charge actual shipping, I'm guessing around $6.00-$7.00 continental USA. I do refund any overage. ~Ann

New Baskets

This first basket is a storage basket for your plastic bags that you get at the grocery store, Walmart, KMart, etc. The top is open and you simply stuff the bag in the top and as a bag is needed, you pull one out of the bottom opening. The basket body is 9 1/2" high and 10" wide. The handle adds another 3 1/2" inches to the height for a total of just under 14" tall. The basket is shaped in a half circle, the back is flat so it will hang against the wall and the front curves out in a semi-circle.Colors in this one are smoked reed with 2 rows of navy. The basket was stained with boiled black walnut shells. A mustard barn star is tied on the center for a prim look. Cost is $28.00 plus $8.50 shipping - continental US only. I'm open to shipping elsewhere, but will charge actual shipping costs.

Basket number 2 is also a wall basket. It is approximately 15" long, 5" deep and 11" tall to the top of the handle. The rim is stained black and the entire basket was dipped in my boiled black walnut stain. The crows and stars are wired onto a rusty wire and then I tied the wire to the basket.

I can envision all sorts of uses for this one. Hang in the bathroom and store rolled wash clothes in it. Near the back door it could hold several pairs of gloves and a couple of hats. By the front door it could hold mail and keys. The bottom is a "closed" bottom, meaning there are no holes for anything to fall through, that makes it the perfect storage basket. This one is also $28.00 plus $8.50 continental US shipping.

Tea Caddy Basket

Perfect for the tea lover in your life! One side of this little basket holds your tea bags and the other the tea saucer/caddy. The basket comes with a tea caddy/saucer included. The the two choices I currently have for the caddy/saucer are the pail of daisies and the salt box house. They are handmade by a lady in Indiana, Marjorie Kennedy. Marjorie does a fabulous job with all her pottery.

Measurements are 5 1/4" long, 4 1/2" wide, 2 3/8" to the top edge of the basket, 3 1/4" to the top of the divider. The tea saucer/caddy is approximately 3 3/4" in diameter. The price of this basket (with saucer included) is $17.00 plus shipping - I charge actual shipping which in the continental USA will be around $5.00.

Napkin Basket

One of the most functional baskets that I make is this napkin/salt & pepper basket. One side holds your dinner napkins and the other, smaller side holds your salt and pepper shakers. The dimensions on this are 11" long x 8 " wide and 3 " high (sides of basket) and approximately 4 1/2 " tall including the divider. The sides are woven with alternating rows of natural and navy reed. The bottom is filled, meaning there are no holes in the bottom of the basket. You get a good idea of the bottom from this second picture.

Salt and Pepper shakers are included in this basket. Price of this basket is $22.00 plus shipping which should be around $8.00. If Navy isn't your color choice, I can do other custom colors, just email me with your request.

Chairside Basket & Rugger's Tote Basket

The Chairside Basket. This is one of my best seller's. It sits on legs - historically baskets that sat up on legs were wool drying baskets. After you sheared your sheep, the wool was washed and put in a basket with an open weave bottom and legs that kept the basket off the floor. This way the water could drain through the holes and the air could circulate to help dry the wool. This updated version features a closed bottom - no holes for knitting needles, crochet hooks, rug hooks, etc to fall through and a handle for easy pickup. The embellishments are called "spiders" - the only kind of spider I like! The colors are a deep navy as the longest, smoked reed - brown as the middle and a denim blue for the smallest spider. Approximate measurements on this basket are: 15" long, 6" deep and with the legs and handle it is approximately 20" Tall. Stained with my own Minwax concoction. $50.00 plus shipping. Rugger's Tote Basket Not just for rug hookers, but a great tote for any crafter.

Approximate measurements on this basket are 15" long, 5" wide and 12" high. The colors used in this one are smoked reed - brown and maroon. The shaker tape handles match the maroon reed. Cherokee Tote basket

Big Tote - perfect for rug hooking, quilting, knitting, crocheting, etc, etc. Dimensions are approximate 15" long, 6 1/2" wide and 12 inches high. The handles are leather, laced on through the sides of the basket. I didn't take a picture of the base, but it is woven and filled with reed - no holes so nothing will fall through the bottom of the basket. Every-other spoke is reinforced (by doubling) for added strength on the bottom. Colors are smoked reed (brown) and navy. Over stained with my own mixture of Minwax - I mix more than one color to create a custom color. $65.00 plus shipping.

Tote basket

Lunch tote basket: brown shaker tape handles, quilt shop fabric liner(not JoAnn's Fabric). Liner is removable for washing. Height is approximately 7" tall and 4 inches deep. I can make in other colors as well: navy, green, burgundy, black.

Chicken Feed Bucket

After tweaking this bucket, I'm very happy with how it turned out. I painted an antique sap bucket satin black and attached prim labels. I designed the labels myself, printed them out and darkened them with boiled black walnut stain. The bucket appears to be full of chicken feed with a stick in the middle - maybe to swat at that pesky honking goose? Actually the stick is the handle to the lid and the corn is glued onto a wooden insert lid so there's plenty of storage space under the lid. Close up of the label - the one on the other side is identical.

Another view so you can see the entire bucket. The bucket is 8 1/2" tall to the rim, 9 1/2" diameter. The price is $27.00 plus $10.00 shipping.

Welcome to my selling blog. I have been a basketweaver for almost 20 years. Every year I weave hundreds of baskets that are sold at Historic Sauder Village in Archbold Ohio. For the last 11 years I've also worked at Sauder Village as a costumed interpreter and basketweaver. I love to weave and love to share my knowledge of basketweaving with our guests. Its been my pleasure to meet so many wonderful people through Sauder Village. Through this blog I can share my love of weaving (and other prim crafts) with all of you too.

Egg basket #1, Woven with 6 1/2" wooden hoops for the rim and handle. Height of this basket is approximately 7" tall. At the widest point this basket is roughly 9 1/2" wide. Standard godseye on both sides create the ears of the basket. I've used 10 ribs per side, creating a tight weave. Each rib is cut individually for it's placement in the basket. The actual weaving is done with 3/16" flat reed. Woven in January 2009 by me. Stained with boiled black walnut stain from Ohio black walnut trees. Eggs are not included!
